Whether it’s hanging up artwork or updating kitchen hardware or sprucing up an old table, a do-it-yourselfer will need a well-equipped toolbox to complete the job. Screwdriver Set

Have you ever bought furniture and wished you had something other than the tiny Allen key provided to tighten in that one last pesky screw? Yeah, we’ve all been there. Having an updated screwdriver set with a range of sizes in both flat and Philips heads is a DIY must-have. If possible, try to find ones with the magnetic tips. You’ll thank yourself later!

Price Range: $10 – $200

Hex Key Tool

Speaking of tiny allen keys, having your own hex key tool of varying sizes would probably work better than what is provided for standard furniture assembly. Rather than buying all of the sizes separately, opt for a jackknife style set, which can provide everything you need in one tool.

Price Range: $5 – $20

Level

If you want your gallery wall to be hung with perfection, a standard level will be your favorite tool. The air bubble inside each of the vials of fluid will let you know when you are completely level to the ground. This tool is also handy for installing wall shelves!

Tape Measure

I always forget to measure things when I go out shopping for new décor, but it’s probably the most important step to take! That’s why having a tape measure in your toolbox is necessary for all sorts of measurement needs. A 25-foot model is sufficient to handle most jobs, and still is portable enough to stick in your pocket. From buying furniture to measuring cabinetry, to getting your home’s square footage, a tape measure is another must-have tool.

Price Range: $5 – $30

Utility Knife

A quality utility knife comes in handy all of the time. Use it to open boxes, cut drywall, slice duct tape, sharpen wood pencils, and more. I recommend investing just a hair more to get a quality utility knife with a rubber covered handle.

Price Range: $2 – $40

A hammer is another obvious toolbox necessity. Find a curved claw hammer that can help pull out nails that inevitably get bent. A 16 oz hammer will also have the weight and versatility to do all sorts of hammering from hanging pictures to building furniture.

Adjustable Wrench

Adjustable Wrench

An adjustable wrench will fit most bolts and eliminates the need to carry multiple fixed size wrenches. Invest in a quality wrench that won’t slip over time. Some brands even offer lifetime warranties!

Power Drill

Cordless Power Drill

Even if you had super-human strength, having a power drill makes hole drilling so much more efficient. Cordless drills combine power, portability and speed all into one tool. Don’t forget the drill bits! I recommend buying the higher quality, single-purpose bits one at a time to save on cash up-front. Eventually you’ll build your own drill bit collection in sizes you actually need!

Price Range: $50 – $300

Set of Pliers

You never know when you need to get a good grip on tiny things! Stock a versatile set of pliers of varying sizes and tips. Also look for high leverage side cutting pliers. They are great for cutting electrical cable and can even cut nails and bolts.

 Price Range: $10 – $75

Duct Tape

Other than obvious patchwork, duct tape can be used for pretty much anything; removing splinters stuck in your skin, taping wires after slicing, you name it. There’s even a survival guide on how duct tape can help you if you’re stranded out in the wilderness with basic camping supplies and this miracle tape.

Price Range: $4 – $11
